Reduced drainage from the wound is a common indicator of adequate wound healing because as a wound heals, the inflammatory phase, during which significant exudate may be produced, diminishes. Once the wound transitions towards the proliferative and maturational phases, the amount of serous drainage typically decreases as tissue repair progresses and the risk of infection reduces. This reduction in drainage suggests that the wound is closing and is less likely to be experiencing complications such as infection or prolonged inflammation.

In contrast, presence of necrotic tissue indicates poor healing and possible infection, while pale surrounding skin can suggest inadequate blood flow or oxygenation to the area, which is not conducive to healing. A foul odor from the wound usually points to an infection or necrosis, indicating that the wound is not healing properly. Therefore, the presence of diminished drainage is a positive sign of the healing process.
